The RADARSAT Constellation Mission (RCM): Extending Operational Marine Surveillance for Environment Canada
نویسنده
چکیده
Environment Canada is the largest Government of Canada user of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data produced by the Canadian RADARSAT missions. Near real-time imagery from both RADARSAT-1 and RADARSAT-2 are used operationally for daily ice monitoring and oil pollution detection programs. Additionally, Environment Canada is assessing the use of marine wind information extracted from SAR data to support operational marine forecasters and numerical weather prediction. The launch of the RADARSAT Constellation Mission (RCM) will more that just ensure continued access to SAR data to support Environment Canada’s operational marine surveillance programs. The RCM will also improve on both the geographic coverage and timeliness of the data acquired in Canada's coastal waters. New modes, like compact polarimetry, also have the potential to provide new and improved ice information.

Moving to the RADARSAT Constellation Mission: Comparing Synthesized Compact Polarimetry and Dual Polarimetry Data with Fully Polarimetric RADARSAT-2 Data for Image Classification of Peatlands
For this research, the Random Forest (RF) classifier was used to evaluate the potential of simulated RADARSAT Constellation Mission (RCM) data for mapping landcover within peatlands. Alfred Bog, a large peatland complex in Southern Ontario, was used as a test case. The goal of this research was to prepare for the launch of the upcoming RCM by evaluating three simulated RCM polarizations for map...
متن کاملOperational Surface Water Detection and Monitoring Using Radarsat 2
Traditional on-site methods for mapping and monitoring surface water extent are prohibitively expensive at a national scale within Canada. Despite successful cost-sharing programs between the provinces and the federal government, an extensive number of water features within the country remain unmonitored. Particularly difficult to monitor are the potholes in the Canadian Prairie region, most of...
متن کاملCapabilities of Canada's planned RADARSAT Constellation
The CSA has initiated a feasibility study for a constellation of low-cost small SAR satellites to ensure C-band data continuity beyond RADARSAT-2. The concept involves three satellites with an option of flying up to six satellites. This is to provide operationally SAR imagery for key maritime surveillance applications such as ship detection, oil spill monitoring, and sea ice mapping. Other appl...

Detailed information on the land cover types present and the horizontal position of the land–water interface is needed for sensitive coastal ecosystems throughout the Arctic, both to establish baselines against which the impacts of climate change can be assessed and to inform response operations in the event of environmental emergencies such as oil spills. Previous work has demonstrated potenti...
